Dear CleanFoodies,

You hear a lot about a low-carbohydrate diet, do you already know everything about it or are you curious about what a low-carbohydrate diet means? For more information keep reading!

What is a low carbohydrate diet?

When you follow a low-carbohydrate diet, you get relatively little energy from carbohydrates. Normally, you will get an average of 20-25% of your energy from carbohydrates, which is about half of what an average adult would eat. While all food and drink consists of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, with a low-carbohydrate diet you eat proportionally more proteins and fats.

When you get 20-25% of your energy from carbohydrates, you will eat about 100 grams of carbohydrates per day. This can be slightly higher when you exercise intensively.

Why should I eat low-carb?

A low-carb diet can focus on several things like improving blood sugar levels, to lose weight or restore insulin sensitivity.

In addition, it is an advantage that you will feel full longer, this is because the diet is often rich in protein. Proteins are also important for building muscle and during a low-carbohydrate and energy diet can ensure that you maintain more muscle mass.

What do you eat with a low-carb diet?

With a low-carbohydrate diet, mainly carbohydrate sources are avoided. Think of grains, ready-made products and biscuits / sweets. Not all products that contain carbohydrates are avoided, considering some carbohydrates are good for you.
