Best Foods to Eat on Your Period

Menstruation Phase: Day 1-5

Day 1-5 of your period is when you are menstruating and losing the most blood. As a result, eating more iron rich foods like red meat, spinach and dark leafy greens is a must. It is also good to eat vitamin C as this helps the body absorb the iron. Vitamin C comes in oranges, peppers, mango, pineapple.

Follicular Phase: Days 5-13

Days 5-13 are when the bleeding has stopped and women experience higher energy levels and endurance levels. Take advantage of these high energy levels by eating healthy carbs and proteins such as oats, brown rice, eggs, fish, fruits, lentils, chicken and turkey.

Luteal and premenstrual phase: Days 17-28

Before we get our period our energy levels may drop, our cravings will increase and we can experience some cramping. Therefore, it is important to increase your B vitamins as these increase serotonin levels which help curb cravings. Find B vitamins in meat, fish, eggs. Magnesium helps with cramps and can be found in nuts, chickpeas, seafood and spinach.
